The environmental factors in the slum are truly demoralizing and a significant health hazard. Indirectly, they greatly contribute to the prevalence of crime and despondency.

An idea was proposed to build sewage trenches to address one of the more urgent sanitation problems. Thanks to a team of international volunteers, the money was quickly raised to perform the work.

1,000 ft. of trenches were built to funnel waste to a nearby river, which improved the sanitation conditions for an estimated 6,000 residents.
